Ross Mason, the new administrator of the Duane Smith auditorium, has been doing an outstanding job of refurbishing the facility. Last year the artist's backstage facilities - the green room and the dressing rooms - were completely rebuilt, so that we no longer need to be embarrased when we host world-class artists. In addition the auditorium interior was painted and the air handling equipment was replaced.
This spring the old splintered stage floor was completely replaced, which will be a big relief to our dancers. This season we will also have a new band shell in place to replace the 50 year old white one, which has been falling apart. And of course supporters of the auditorium continue to raise money to replace all the seats, which are also reaching the end of their useful life.
An expansion and redesign of the Smith lobby is in the planning stages with demolition of the existing structure scheduled for the summer of 2011. Early planning calls for the lobby to be expanded so that it covers the entire front of the hall and also extends into the grassy dead space and walkway between the existing structure and the orchestra rehearsal room. The vision is to configure the space for maximum flexibility so that it can accommodate a variety of events including pre-concert and post-concert receptions, a small portable stage and portable seating for 100-200 people.
Our thanks to Ross for bringing the auditorium up to the level this town, and our artists, deserve .
